Peeping Tom

The fact that we, students, cannot feel entirely safe on campus continues to amaze me. Shouldn’t we all be allowed to walk around without worry? Well, that is certainly not the case. It is now becoming impossible for students not to worry about keeping an eye out for “peeping tom’s” or any others of that sort. In this issue of Santa Monica College’s The Corsair, staff writer Ashley Metcalf reports on a “peeping tom” incident that occurred on September 1st at 11:30am. In this incident, there were two victims. The suspect was identified as Joshua Flores. Here, Flores, of south gate, wandered around the women’s restroom and invaded their privacy. Flores refused to give the officers the correct information, but once given the correct information, the officers realized that he, Flores, wasn’t even a student at SMC. What this should tell us is that “no matter where this happens, it is absolutely unacceptable, especially in the bathroom. It’s a place of what should be personal privacy”. If anything, this article has taught me that one can never be too cautious of their surroundings, even if they feel somewhat “safe”. Not only that, but also that college campus’ now need more security resources available to their students. We, as students, need to unite and make our best efforts to put an end to these types of incidents. We need to put an end to all “peeping toms” and others of that sort.

The Press Throughout Time

The press is a source of media which is utilized as a form of communication. Whether it be through newspapers, magazines, television, or radio. It provides us all with current significant news that involve us all in one way or another.. At least that’s what I thought/considered the press to be. Until now that is. Until now, that the press has significantly transformed into something other than a news source.

Above is a photograph of a current Los Angeles Times cover which astounded me because of its content. Its content being nothing more than a shot of the Kardashian sisters. As an aspiring Journalist, I wasn’t necessarily outraged, but I was..disappointed per say. Disappointed to witness all that the press has amounted to. I mean, wasn’t there a time where all that the front page of a major newspaper contained were vital facts and information? This cover was definitely not suitable for the LA Times. At least not as it’s front cover. Redundant “media/news” such as these are unnecessary to newspapers and would be most suitable in magazines.

Cali Art..

For those who’ve lived in Los Angeles, California, cannot deny that you have witnessed portions, if not all, that this beautiful city has to tell/offer. Whether it be with its history, museums, or art. Art in particular is something that is very  common in this, the city of angels. From photography and calligraphy,  to painting and graffiti. It surrounds us. All telling a story that we have yet to uncover.

All across town, graffiti decorates the back of street signs and walls near the ocean. There are, almost daily, fresh paintings on Downtown Los Angeles buildings and on billboards along the highway. Little by little, graffiti has become a popular way for teens and others to express all that they are feeling.

As popular as graffiti may be, many find it very controversial. Some find it to be a misuse of paint and art (some don’t even consider it a form of art), but for those who enjoy expressing themselves through graffiti, it is just another misunderstood concept. Whether or not we all believe that this is truly a form of art, graffiti artist remain firm on the idea of conveying their thoughts and ideas through their artwork/visuals.  Blown away by all messages and stories being told through this form of art, I, wanting but not having the tools/talent for graffiti, remain an admirer.
